Julia O'Malley

Julia O’Malley, a third-generation Alaskan, is an independent journalist who lives in Anchorage. She has written about Alaska food, culture, politics and climate for The New York Times, The Washington Post, High Country News, The Guardian and National Geographic News among other publications. She received a James Beard Award in 2018 for a story about a young whale hunter who was cyber-bullied by environmentalists in the village of Gambell. Her first book, The Whale and the Cupcake: Stories of Subsistence, Longing, and Community in Alaska, which is about the state's food culture, is due out this winter.
