Farm to fuel (video)
How pesticide-coated corn seed used to make ethanol wound up killing a bunch of bees in Nebraska
This article is part of FERN’s series The Biodiversity Crisis
As part of the rollout of Buzzkill, FERN’s podcast series on the pollinator crisis, we are happy to share Farm to Fuel, a documentary short about the impact of neonicotinoids on bee populations. Created and produced by filmmaker Alex Hinton, with support from The New Lede, Farm to Fuel tells the story of how neonicotinoid-covered corn seed, processed at an ethanol factory in Mead, Nebraska, leeched into the community, killing colonies of bees at a University of Nebraska research facility.
Alex’s reporting covers similar ground as Buzzkill episode two, “The Mystery of the Dying Bees,” and the text article “Buzzkill,” copublished by FERN and Switchyard Magazine, both of which were reported by Dan Charles. We hope you enjoy the documentary, and our podcast series, which is releasing episodes weekly into March.
