The Food & Environment Reporting Network, a 501(c)3 charity registered in the state of New York, was incorporated in 2010 and began operations in 2011. We have produced more than 200 stories to date on the essential subjects of food, agriculture and environmental health. Our stories are local, national and international in scope, and we have worked with dozens of outlets in print, online, and broadcast news. By placing stories with different outlets and venues, often in more than one format, FERN is able to reach both the passionate and the curious, the reform-minded and the skeptical.
With the collapse of the business models of traditional news media, the type of reporting that represented the greatest public service — investigative or “watchdog” journalism — has declined precipitously. Such journalism has always provided a necessary counterweight to the power of government and corporations. While activists and advocates have attempted to fill the gap with their own voices, the fact remains that trusted, non-partisan sources remain an essential component of informing the public and stimulating change.
