GOP vs. Democratic split as House nears farm bill markup
Republicans and Democrats on the House Agriculture Committee disagree on three major issues for the new farm bill — SNAP cuts, climate funding, and USDA access to a $30 billion reserve fund — despite recent exchanges of ideas. The committee apparently is headed for a "very partisan" bill-drafting session at the end of May, said a House Democratic staff worker on Tuesday.
Stabenow would delay farm bill to 2025 to prevent SNAP and climate cuts
Senate Agriculture chairwoman Debbie Stabenow said she would delay the new farm bill, already five months overdue, to 2025 rather than accept cuts — sought by Republicans— in SNAP and climate funds. "Tell you what: If we get to the end of the year [and] instead of a farm bill, I have protected nutrition for children and families in this country, I'm okay with that," said Stabenow on Tuesday.
Report: Food insufficiency grew when SNAP benefits shrank
Two million SNAP households "faced food insufficiency" following the nationwide termination in March of so-called emergency allotments enacted during the pandemic, said researchers from the University of Pennsylvania medical school.

House Republicans will jeopardize passage of the farm bill if they insist on cuts in food stamps, said the senior Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee on Tuesday. "If they want to pass a farm bill that supports America's farmers and families, they need to keep their hands off SNAP," said Rep. David Scott of Georgia.
