Since mid-April, FERN reporter Leah Douglas has been counting and mapping cases of Covid-19 at meatpacking plants, food processing facilities, and farms. With nearly 46,000 cases and 188 deaths reported in 44 states, the virus has continued to spread among vulnerable workers. A new version of the map and several data analyses, published Monday, let readers explore how Covid-19 has spread to nearly 600 food facilities across the country.
The new map allows users to search by company, state, sector, and when the outbreak was reported. Cumulative and daily case charts show the spread of the virus over time and how new cases have risen and fallen in each sector. A map of cases and outbreaks by state demonstrates where the spread of Covid-19 among food system workers has been most severe. And a bubble graph of cases shows which companies are responsible for the highest number of Covid-19 cases among their workers. Each of these graphics will be updated daily.
