Editor’s desk – 2015: And that’s a wrap!

FERN has always dug deeply to explore the food system, uncovering injustice and revealing the possibilities for change. This past year, we took that mission overseas, reflecting the globalized nature of subjects we cover. We dramatically expanded the breadth of our stories, making connections between the food we eat, the global system that brings it to our plates and its environmental impact.

We’re bringing new issues to light, so that readers can draw a line between the palm oil in their cookies and the Indonesian land grabs that made that ingredient possible; or understand how many of the strawberries we eat are exposing Latino school kids to dangerous pesticides.

To do this work we need partners: the writers and photographers and graphic artists who produce the work, the journalism organizations and media companies that help shape and publish these stories, and funders like you. Because top-notch, award-winning work doesn’t just reflect the passion of incredible journalists to tell great stories; it also takes money to produce. That’s where we – and you – come in.

A tax-deductible donation from you today will ensure we can continue to commission great writing and reporting tomorrow. If you’ve already donated, thank you! If not, you can give right now online, or mail a check to the Food & Environment Reporting Network, 1133 Broadway, Ste. 706, New York, NY 10010.

Here’s a rundown of our biggest stories this year.

Toxic Chemicals, Social Justice, Land Grabs

Climate Change, Farming and Migrants

Real Solutions, Food Trends

Expect more great stories from FERN in the coming year. In the meantime, we wish you and your families a happy holiday.
