You say potato, I say eggplant

A year after “Ketchup ‘n’ Fries” aka TomTato – a plant that produces tomatoes and potatoes – became available to gardeners in the United States and Europe, the same seed and plant company in England is offering “Egg and Chips,” “after a favorite English dish of fried eggs and French fries. Although in this case, the eggs are eggplants,” says Modern Farmer. “The chips part is dead on, since the plant produces potatoes as well.”

The company, Thompson & Morgan, says “Egg and Chips” is produced through grafting of eggplant and potato plants. The top part of the grafting is eggplant and the bottom part is the potato. “Unfortunately, the Egg and Chips aren’t available in the United States,” says Modern Farmer, which provides a link to information on the Internet about hand-grafting plants.

The Egg & Chips plant – Thompson & Morgan trade-marked both names – will produce three or four large eggplants and up to 2 kg (4-1/2 pounds) of white potatoes, says the company’s website. The plant is relatively compact, growing 20 inches tall with a spread of 12 inches.
