Global coffee production is forecast for 149.8 million bags weighing 60 kg apiece, down for the second year in a row, says USDA in its semi-annual Coffee: World Markets and Trade report. Output of the hardier and higher-caffeine robusta beans, grown at lower altitudes, continues to rise while the milder-tasting Arabica beans is down. An outbreak of leaf rust has in Latin America has reduced output, says the International Coffee Organization. USDA says Arabica beans will account for 55 percent of world output this year, compared to 62 percent in 2010/11. In Brazil, the No 1 grower, Robusta production will be a record 17 million bags but Arabica will drop to 34.2 million bags, reflecting drought in two states this year and loss of trees to frost last year in another states.
