Researchers at Texas Tech “found evidence of antibiotics, feedlot-derived bacteria and DNA sequences that encode for antibiotic resistance” in air samples taken near cattle feedlots in the southern High Plains, says Feedstuffs. “It is the first study documenting aerial transmission of antibiotic resistance from an open-air farm setting.” Feedstuffs quoted a Texas Tech scientist as saying while scientists could not assess if the airborne materials were hazardous to people, they indicated a pathway for antibiotic-resistant bacteria to travel to inhabited areas. Further studies were needed to determine where the particulates travel, said the researcher.
