Virulent Asian-American strain of PEDv confirmed in Ukraine

The highly virulent Asian-American strain of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus was found on a 5,000-sow hog farm in Ukraine, says ThePigSite. It says some 30,000 piglets died on the farm “in a matter of weeks” and cites concern the virus could spread into Europe. The disease does not affect humans. PEDv killed more than 7 million piglets on U.S. farms since mid-2013 and curtailed pork production.

weekly report says PEDv has been found in 33 states, the newest infection being in Hawaii in mid-November. Since June 5, 2,217 cases have been confirmed.
