Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has vaulted into the top tier of Democrats under consideration by the Hillary Clinton campaign for nomination as vice president, said Politico. The Hagstrom Report, meanwhile, cited a source close to the Clinton campaign as saying Vilsack was under serious consideration.
A former two-term governor of Iowa, Vilsack would be a counterweight in the Midwest to Republican Donald Trump’s selection of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate, according to Democrats at the summer meeting of the National Governors Association, said Politico. “The secretary himself suggested in conversations there that he was under serious consideration, according to individuals familiar with the discussions.”
Clinton is expected to announce her decision after the Republican National Convention adjourns. The presumed frontrunners for Clinton are Virginia Sen. Tom Kaine and Labor Secretary Tom Perez, said Politico.
