The Vermont state Senate voted 26-2 for a bill that requires labels on food made with genetically modified ingredients from July 2016. The Burlington Free Press says it appears Vermont will be the first state with a GMO labeling law. “The legislation is up for another vote in the Senate Wednesday before it goes back to the House, which passed a slightly different version last year. Gov. Peter Shumlin has indicated he’s likely to sign the bill,” said the Free Press.
Connecticut and Maine have passed GMO labeling laws that will not take effect until neighboring states enact similar laws. Meanwhile, bills have been filed in Congress that would have opposite effects on GMO foods. One would pre-empt state laws and leave labeling as voluntary. Two others would require labels.
