USDA would ban food-frying for meals at day care centers

Day care operators would be barred from frying food for meals served to children and adults under rules proposed by USDA. The government says the proposal, published in the Federal Register, would align day-care meals with school lunch reforms. USDA set a 90-day comment period on the proposed rule.

USDA listed a dozen revisions, including, “Frying be disallowed as an on-site preparation method for day care institutions. Additionally…this proposed rule would require that day care institutions make drinking water available throughout the day to all children upon their request.” The proposal also says only fat-free flavored milk can be served and that tofu is allowed as a meat alternative.
