USDA to award $8 million for nutrition training

The Agriculture Department said it will award $8 million “to help school nutrition professionals better prepare healthy meals for their students.” Some $2.6 million will be grants to 19 states to train workers in the school lunch and school breakfast programs. The remaining $5.6 million will be grants that encourage healthy eating. The USDA said those activities could include “Smarter Lunchroom” strategies, such as enticing displays of food and colorful nicknames for foods that encourage children to make healthy choices. The department announced the grants at the same time Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack called on Congress to reauthorize child-nutrition programs.
