In a step to protect the U.S. swine, herd, AgSec Vilsack announced the Agriculture Department will require reports of cases of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus and the similar Swine Delta Coronavirus. The goal is to slow the spread of the PEDV, which has killed millions of piglets and has been reported in 30 states since it was first confirmed in the United States last year. The disease is not a risk to people and is not a food safety concern, says USDA.
USDA also will require reports on movements of pigs, vehicles, and other equipment leaving affected premises.
