Declaring it “a major step forward” for food service workers, the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service released its first mobile app. The agency said the app, named the Food Buying Guide Mobile App, will make it easier to serve healthy and tasty meals through its child nutrition programs, which include school lunch.
The new app for mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, “can be an immediate resource to over 280,000 program operators” who oversee child nutrition programs and “countless food industry representatives working with these programs. Ultimately, this technological solution will help operators better serve over 34 million children each day,” said the USDA. The food programs have rules on the types of foods and their components that can be served.
The USDA has also published the information in a manual, the Food Buying Guide, and in a web-based interactive version of the buying guide.
