USDA asks sugar industry to support TPP

Agriculture Undersecretary Micheal Scuse asked the sugar industry at its summer meeting to support the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership, reports DTN. The American Sugar Alliance, which represents growers, processors and refiners, has not taken a position on the proposed trade pact. “TPP is a sensitive issue for the sugar growers because both Australia and Canada have asked for increased access to the U.S. market,” says DTN. During the meeting in New Mexico, Scuse and a U.S. trade official said the administration would not undermine the sugar program during TPP negotiations. Scuse told the sugar group, “We have a lot of work to do in Congress, we are going to need your help.” A spokesman for the sugar alliance told DTN that some countries “continue to make unreasonable demands on sugar” as part of TPP talks.
