U.S. turns to WTO when India keeps poultry market closed

A year ago, the United States won a WTO decision against India for its ban on imports of U.S. poultry meat. And now the U.S. is back in Geneva, asking for trade compensation because India has not complied with the WTO decision, said Reuters.

An agenda circulated by the international trade referee indicated the claim for compensation would be launched at a July 19 session. The WTO did not provide details. The Obama administration said U.S. sales of poultry meat to India could exceed $300 million when the market was opened.

India said the ban on U.S. poultry meat was a precaution against highly pathogenic avian influenza. The WTO ruled the ban was discriminatory and the United States said India had 90 outbreaks of bird flu in the past 10 years.
