Days after the United States threatened to suspend favorable agricultural trade rules, South Africa and America reached an agreement that will pave the way to imports of up to 65,000 tonnes of U.S. poultry meat, says news site AllAfrica. Veterinarians from both countries agreed on a protocol for sales of U.S. poultry and chicks, which will exclude birds from areas hit by avian influenza. Trade Minister Rob Davies told Parliament the next step will be a veterinary agreement on salmonella and a separate proposal on pork shoulder cuts, said AllAfrica. “That should conclude the negotiation and prevent South Africa’s exit from AGOA’s (African Growth and Opportunity Act) agricultural agreement, he said.”
