Ahold USA, the parent company of grocery chains that include Giant and Stop and Shop, joined the Fair Food Program of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. The program’s goal is to improve the conditions for farmworkers in Florida. Ahold has nearly 780 supermarkets in 14 states and the District of Columbia. Its participation will mean a 75-percent increase in the number of stores that carry Fair Food tomatoes. As part of the program, Ahold will buy Florida tomatoes only from growers who participate in the program, and will pay a premium for the tomatoes that will be passed along to workers.
