After meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, President Trump told reporters that he might consider recommitting the United States to the Paris climate accord, which he pulled the country out of in May, said Reuters.
“Something could happen with respect to the Paris accords; let’s see what happens,” Trump told a news conference. “If it happens, that will be wonderful, and if it doesn’t, that’ll be okay, too.”
Trump has complained that the treaty went light on heavy polluters like China and India, while hitting American industry.
For his part, Macron told reporters that “there is no sudden and unexpected change today [on the treaty]—otherwise we would have announced it. But there is the shared intention to continue discussing these issues.”
According to Reuters, Trump might be looking to warm his relationship with Macron in order to have a friend in Europe, where the American president is politically isolated. Likewise, Macron would like to use his relationship with the United States to bolster France’s role on the global stage.
