Thirty nations restrict US poultry due to bird flu in Northwest

Thirty countries, including Canada, Mexico and Japan, have imposed restrictions or a total ban on imports of poultry from the U.S. Northwest following discovery of a highly pathogenic avian influenza in Oregon and Washington state last month, says Politico. The disease, called highly pathogenic because of its mortality rate, was confirmed in three locations. None of them was a commercial flock.

South Korea, Thailand and Sri Lanka have banned all U.S. poultry and poultry products, says Politico. “We disagree with these actions and are taking a number of steps to address them and help support the U.S. poultry industry,” said a USDA statement.
