Think tank says GOP expansion of SNAP time limit affects 1 million people

About 1 million Americans would be affected by the House Republican plan to apply more broadly a 90-day limit on SNAP benefits to people who do not work at least 20 hours a week, said a think tank on Monday. “Not everyone newly subject to the requirement would lose benefits,” said the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, but it suggested many would be in peril.

The GOP package would apply the 90-day limit on SNAP benefits in a three-year period to so-called ABAWDs — able-bodied adults without dependents — who are ages 18-55, up from the current 18-49.

“Typically during past non-recessionary periods, about one-third of the U.S. population has lived in areas that qualify for waivers [of the limit] in states that seek them from the U.S. Department of Agriculture,” said the Center in an analysis of the GOP package.

The Center says time limits on food assistance do not result in higher employment.
