Gardening media star P. Allen Smith talks about his farm

Operating from Moss Mountain Farm in Arkansas, P. Allen Smith is a familiar name to gardeners and adherents of the food movement, says the UC Food Observer in a Q&A with Smith, who is an author and head of a media company. Smith, whose company produces television gardening shows for PBS, says, “I come from a long line of small, independent farmers.”

His farm demonstrates organic gardening principles. “We provide demonstrations about healthy soil practices. We help people understand why the soil is so important, and why you need to look at soil as an organism.” Smith says he’s been part of the local food movement since 1993.

“There is a huge opportunity for those who want to be a part of the local food economy. The public loves the stories behind their food,” Smith told UC Food Observer. “They want to support their local family farmers. And I don’t think it’s only consumers seeking rose-tinted images of the farm … they are very interested in how this food is grown and who is growing it.”

“It’s not only about the food,” he added. “It’s also about the relationship of the food with the community. The opportunity is for those who want to provide a product that is differentiated in their area, something that goes beyond the simple food commodity. That’s where the opportunity lies.”
