Herbicide-resistant “superweeds” are the result of “over-reliance on a single class of herbicides,” says the Weed Science Society of America. It issued a fact sheet to debunk misconceptions that superweeds are the result of genetic transfer from biotech crops – they are not – or the weeds are more invasive than other plants. “In the absence of herbicides, resistant weeds are no more competitive or ecologically damaging than their non-resistant relatives,” says the nonprofit group. it says “the key to keeping weeds from causing dramatic changes in crop production is to adopt effective management strategies.”
