Senate spat sidelines USDA funding

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid set aside the “minibus” appropriations bill that includes fiscal 2015 funding for USDA after a disagreement over how to handle amendments. Reid suggested that 60 votes should be required to adopt an amendment. Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said there should be open debate of “a reasonable number of amendments from both sides” with a simple majority needed for approval. Neither wanted to budge, so Reid brought a bipartisan sportsmans bill to the floor for consideration.

The House decided, on a party-line, 230-184 roll call to allow only eight amendments to be considered for the CFTC reauthorization bill. The House is scheduled to work on the Defense Department funding bill today.
