Senate ag panelist Heitkamp may run for governor-Politico

North Dakota Sen Heidi Heitkamp, elected in 2012 and a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, is among three Democrats who may run for governor in 2016 rather than seek re-election to the Senate in 2018, says Politico. The other two are Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Joe Machin of West Virginia. “Heitkamp’s office won’t address the gubernatorial rumors, but wary North Dakota Republicans are considering a plan to tinker with the state’s Senate vacancy law,” said the Politico story which looked at Democrats from states that are trending Republican. Heitkamp ran for governor in 2000 but lost. Politico quotes a North Dakota Democratic Party official as saying, “there’s lot of Democrats that would be ecstatic about the idea” of Heitkamp for governor.
