A new satellite-based monitoring system can spot logging of endangered forests in as little time as a week, depending on cloud cover, says the environmental group World Resources Institute. The Global Land Analysis and Discovery system was developed by the University of Maryland and Google and “detects tree cover loss in Peru, Republic of Congo and Indonesian Borneo at 30-meter resolution, roughly the size of two basketball courts.” Until now, detailed satellite data might not be updated for a year. In Borneo, WRI says the satellite system shows the expansion of palm-oil plantations.
