Prosthetics and the working farm

“While high-end prosthetics are advancing by leaps and bounds, devices that can hold up to farming remain elusive. And the need is strong, as farming remains one of the most dangerous professions around,” writes Rose Eveleth at Modern Farmer. “For many farmers, the first challenge is finding a doctor who understands what farming entails.” Simple, sturdy and reliable prosthetics are more important than advanced electronics. Besides the devices, adaptations in farm equipment can make life easier for the farmer and reduce wear and tear on the prosthetic. A University of Kentucky researcher says farmers would benefit from talking to each other about life with prosthetics. ““I really think that if a few of them got together and formed a Facebook page and were willing to share their stories and tips it would probably be the most helpful thing they could do,” she says to Modern Farmer.
