Progress made, more needed on Chesapeake Bay pollution

States in the Chesapeake Bay region made progress in controlling water pollution from agriculture and communities but many jurisdictions are short of goals, says the Associated Press in summarizing a report to be released on Wednesday by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Choose Clean Water Coalition. The report focuses on commitments for improvement in the near term.

The EPA announced in late 2010 a “pollution diet” for the six-state that calls for reducing nitrogen and phosphorus runoff by one-fourth and sediment by one-fifth by 2025. “This pollution diet is driven primarily by jurisdictions’ plans to put all needed pollution controls in place by 2025 and EPA will hold jurisdictions accountable for results along the way,” EPA said at the time.
