Foodmakers pulled cookies, energy bars and pretzels from grocery shelves in a food recall prompted by the discovery of peanut residue in Grain Craft flour, the nation’s largest independent wheat miller.
Though the FDA stated that “the amount of peanut exposure from the flour is low and not expected to cause adverse health effects in the vast majority of peanut allergic consumers,” companies that use Grain Craft flour, including Kellogg, Frito-Lay, Clif Bar and Mars, have recalled some of its products.
Hostess reported two incidents involving children after it recalled 710,000 cases of snack cakes and donuts in June, but no other companies have reported incidents. Of food allergic children, peanut is the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and then shellfish, according to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology.
