Oxfam calls for better pay for poultry plant workers

Workers at poultry processing plants endure “grim” conditions, says Oxfam America, in a report that calls for a better working environment at plants run by the four largest companies – Tyson Foods, Pilgrim’s Perdue and Sanderson Farms. Oxfam says the processors, who dominate the market, should provide workers with better pay and benefits, a safer workplace and a voice in  the plant, reports Harvest Public Media. “The companies take advantage of these economically desperate populations and enforce what we call a climate of fear,” said Oliver Gottfried of Oxfam. The National Chicken Council, a trade group, says the injury rate has fallen over the past two decades and that the industry seeks “new and innovative ways to protect our workforce.”
