USDA releases annual Food Security in the United States report, 9 a.m. ET. A year ago, the USDA said the prevalence of food insecurity was 11.1 percent in 2018, the first time the rate was at pre-recession levels. Food insecurity is defined as difficulty during the year in providing enough food for all members of a household. The new report will cover 2019 conditions. Surveys say the food insecurity rate roughly doubled during the coronavirus pandemic this spring and summer. The USDA will hold a webinar at 11 a.m. ET to discuss the report. USDA releases monthly Crop Production and WASDE reports, noon ET. A month ago, the USDA forecast the largest corn crop ever, 15.3 billion bushels, and the second-largest soybean harvest, 4.42 billion bushels. The forecast was based on the condition at the start of August and did not account from derecho damage in Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska on Aug 12 or the effects of drought in the western Corn Belt in the latter part of the month.
Final day to apply for USDA payments through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue has said a new version of the program will be offered to cover losses since early spring.
