Oldest U.S. senator, Grassley of Iowa, is hospitalized with infection

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the oldest serving senator, was in a Washington hospital for treatment of an infection, said his office on Tuesday. Grassley, 90, is a bulldog advocate of corn ethanol and a longtime proponent of stricter limits on farm subsidy payments.

Grassley “is receiving antibiotic infusions at an area hospital to treat an infection. He is in good spirits and will return to work as soon as possible following doctors’ orders,” according to a statement from the senator’s office. The office also cancelled a weekly teleconference by Grassley with ag reporters, scheduled for Wednesday.

Elected to his eighth Senate term in 2022, Grassley is a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. He had surgery last year after fracturing a hip.
