Nebraska and Iowa again have top ag districts

The vast 3rd Congressional District of Nebraska and the 4th Congressional District of Iowa, separated by the Missouri River, are the top farm districts in America, based on the value of their crops and livestock, said the Agriculture Department on Wednesday. They finished in the same order — Nebraska first and Iowa second — in the 2022 Census of Agriculture as they did in the 2017 census.

Nebraska’s 3rd District, which covers most of the state except for the Omaha and Lincoln areas, had $22.97 billion in sales, and Iowa’s 4th District, the northwestern third of the state, had $22.1 billion in sales. Both districts border the Missouri River and produce corn, soybeans, cattle, and hogs. Nebraska has more cattle and Iowa more hogs.

The “Big First” Congressional District, spanning two-thirds of Kansas, placed third in sales, at $17.9 billion, followed by the 7th Congressional District in western Minnesota, with $15.3 billion in sales, and South Dakota’s “At Large” district, covering the entire state, with $12.9 billion in sales.
