A report from the National Academy of Sciences suggest four priorities for research to assure an adequate meat supply for a world population that could reach 10 billion by 2050. Meat and egg consumption could increase by 73 percent from current levels and dairy consumption by 58 percent, according to one estimate. The report says research should focus on animal breeding technology and genetics; adaptation to climate change; animal health, including alternatives to sub-therapeutic use of antibiotics; and animal welfare, such improvements in handling, transport and slaughter. “Animal science research needs to be reinvigorated if our agricultural system is to meet these challenges in a sustainable way,” said Bernard Goldstein, chair of the committee that wrote the report, in a NAS release.
