Multiple studies say rate of sea level rise is growing

At least the third study in a year has found that the rate of sea level rise is increasing. The most recent report, published in Nature Climate Change, said that the rate of sea level rise had grown from 2.2 millimeters per year in 1993 to a 3.3-millimeter annual rise in 2014.

“Earlier this year, a different group of researchers found sea level rise was only about 1.1 millimeters per year before 1990, whereas in the period between 1993 through 2012 it was 3.1 millimeters per year,” says Alaska Dispatch News (ADN). “NASA, at present, puts the rate of sea level rise at 3.4 millimeters per year.”

Individual estimates might vary, but the broader trend is clear, bringing major consequences to coastal communities in Alaska and elsewhere, says ADN.
