Mississippi town sees gigabyte network as economic stimulus

With a population of 2,300, Quitman, Mississippi, will be one of 10 communities in the state to get a 1 gigabyte per second broadband network, says the Daily Yonder. “It’s a dose of what Quitman needs to remake itself, town leaders say.” The town responded heartily to an offer by C-Spire, a telecommunications company, to install the ultra-speed network if communities would guarantee a 45 percent subscription rate. Quitman expects to hit 80 percent by next year. “Quitman’s build out will cover the entire city and several large areas in Clarke County,” says the Yonder. The town will open a business incubator as part of a plan to increase high school graduation rates, bring youger residents into town and to be a premier site for business.
