Milk by the bag at school, not by carton

For most U.S. schoolchildren, milk at school comes in a waxy half-pint carton. Golden Hills Elementary School, near Omaha, is trying something different, says Modern Farmer – milk in a bag. School officials say there is less waste with bags than with cartons. The children can see how much milk is left, according to the school food director. Bagged milk is a novel idea in America but common in eastern Canada. According to Modern Farmer, “DuPont introduced bagged milk in 1967, around the same time that other companies introduced plastic jugs and cardboard cartons” as the successor to the glass bottles that had been used for years. The bags were a simple way to make the conversion from pints and quarts to milliliters.
