Mexico, Canada and US vow fair and open ag trade
The agriculture ministers of the three giant nations of North America met in Mexico City and issued a statement “to reaffirm the benefits of fair and open trade for our economies and food security…From Mexico City, to Washington, to Ottawa, we will continue to show the world how trade and open borders support economic growth and jobs.” The three-paragraph statement called for “a integrated North American market that operates using science-based rules and reduces technical barriers to trade.”
All the same, there are disputes. Mexico and Canada are challenging U.S. country-of-origin meat-labeling rules at the World Trade Organization. The U.S. International Trade Commission is investigating complaints by sugar growers of dumping by Mexico. AgSec Vilsack issued a statement on strong U.S.-Mexico farm trade.
