Meat industry wants 120-day comment period on diet report

The North American Meat Institute filed a request with the government for a 120-day comment period on the report that the Agriculture and Health departments will use as the basis for the new edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The report, written by a panel of nutrition experts, was released last week. It recommends lower consumption of sugar and meat. In its request, the trade group said the proposed 45-day comment period is too short to allow a thorough review of the 571-page report and the supplemental materials that accompany it. The government updates the Dietary Guidelines every five years.
