Local farms gain attention after Russia bans food imports

One result of Russia’s ban on food imports from Europe and the United States is a surge in interest in domestic food producers, especially organic farms, says the New York Times in a story from Moscow. The Times quotes a leader of the farm-to-table movement as saying, “If sanctions give a chance to develop local farmers, to develop sustainable agriculture, it is very good. But I am not sure it will happen.” The government provides little of the financing, transport or access to land that the Russian farm sector needs to expand, a range of experts told the Times. In the past 20 years, more than 106 million acres of tillable land has gone fallow and Russia has fewer cattle than in the 1940s.
