The anti-obesity group Global Energy Balance Network “announced this week that it was shutting down after months of pressure from public health authorities who said that the group’s mission was to play down the link between soft drinks and obesity,” said the New York Times. The newspaper reported during the summer that the group was created by Coca-Cola, the world’s largest soft-drink company. The group said it was discontinuing operation due to limited resources. The medical school at the University of Colorado said last month that it would return a $1 million grant from Coca-Cola, which helped start the anti-obesity group. Coca-Cola’s chief scientist, who was involved in getting the anti-obesity group off the ground, is retiring.
