Lawmakers to POTUS: “Be bold” to protect monarch butterfly

In a letter, 52 House Democrats asked President Obama to “be bold” and protect the monarch butterfly under the Endangered Species Act, “the last, best chance to save this amazing species and its incredible migration.” The letter said the use of herbicides on genetically engineered crops was a factor in the loss of habitat and a sharp decline in the monarch butterfly population, said Agri-Pulse. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began a year-long “status review” early this year on a request to list the butterfly as a threatened species. Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine organized the letter.
