Law firms that specialize in personal injury cases “are lining up plaintiffs for what they say could be ‘mass tort’ actions against agrichemical giant Monsanto Co” over glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup weedkiller, says Reuters. A lawsuit filed in Delaware on behalf of three people says Monsanto misled regulators and the public about the safety of glyphosate. A WHO agency ruled in March that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” A Colorado law firm held town hall meetings in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska in late summer to seek clients and told Reuters it is putting together cases for 50 people.
Monsanto said glyphosate is not a carcinogen and that extensive databases prove it. Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides in the world.
