Kellogg – Will reduce greenhouse gases by 15 percent

The world’s largest cereal maker, Kellogg Co, said it will reduce energy and greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent by 2020 to combat climate change. The greenhouse gas target, based on emission per tonne of food produced is among five goals announced by the foodmaker to conserve natural resources. Others include a 15 percent reduction in water used to produce a tonne of food, more reliance on carbon-free energy at its plants and more recycling.

Kellogg said it works with U.S. suppliers such as Bunge Corp, “to encourage farmers to implement best management practices, track farm-level and watershed outcomes that will benefit the region, and measure continuous improvement of on-farm practices using Field to Market metrics.” It said it employs similar steps around the world to reduce its impact on the environment. Kellogg, which also makes cookies and crackers, spelled out its goals in a four-page Global Sustainability 2020 Commitments paper.

“We know that our most significant environmental impacts occur in our supply chain, in the growing of our agricultural ingredients,” it said.

Oxfam said Kellogg’s announcement, which follows action by General Mills, “adds momentum to calls on governments and the wider food and agriculture industry to recognize that climate change is real, it’s happening now, and we need to tackle it.”
