Kalettes “develop in a whorl of tightly spaced, brilliantly colored rosettes” on tall stalks, says Johnny’s description. Mature florets “feature ruffled, purple-green petals…when lightly cooked, they retain their unique coloration.”
British seed company Tozer Seeds hopes for U.S. success with Kalette, a conventionally bred cross of Brussels spouts and kale, says FreshFruitPortal. The company says the hybrid vegetable “has a milder version of the nutty Brussels sprouts flavor and the leaves are more tender than kale.” The vegetable’s origin date from 1995 when a researcher started mixing members of the vast Brassica family of plants. Tozer selected six large U.S. growers for the cool-weather crop and one seed outlet, Johnny’s Select Seeds, for direct-to-market growers and home gardeners.
