Immigration reformer loses hope for House action

Rep Luis Gutierrez, long active on immigration reform legislation in the House, “declared the prospects for reform dead this year and said the only option left is for President Barack Obama to take unilateral action to stem deportations,” says Politico. It quotes the Illinois Democrat as telling majority-party Republicans during a floor speech, “Your chance to play a role in how immigration and deportation policies are carried out this year are over. Having given ample time to craft legislation, you failed.”

Gutierrez wanted GOP leaders to outline a bill by early July. Other Democrats say there is a chance if the House acts before August.
