House passes budget to turn food stamps into block grant

The Republican-controlled House passed a budget that boosts military spending and slashes domestic programs, including Medicaid and food stamps, said the New York Times. “The budget would turn Medicaid into block grants to the states, cutting health care spending for the poor by $900 billion. The food stamp program would also be turned into block grants and cut by hundreds of billions of dollars.” The Senate intends to complete work on its budget this week. Its plan calls for large cuts in domestic spending but does not specify action on public nutrition programs.

Ten anti-hunger groups signed a joint letter against “the draconian cuts and structural changes” proposed for food stamps. “Millions of seniors, people with disabilities, children, veterans, low‐wage workers, and people seeking jobs will likely be harmed if the program is weakened,” said the letter.
