Hello, CFTC reauthorization; adieu, school lunch waiver

The U.S. House may take up reauthorization of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission this week. It is one of two major bills on the agenda; the other is the Defense Department appropriations bill for fiscal 2015. The CFTC bill, HR 4413, also creates additional protection for customers’ funds and reduces regulation of end users, companies such as manufacturers, food processors and utilities that use derivatives to lock in prices and supplies of materials they need for their operations. For the moment, the House is putting on the shelf the USDA funding bill that would create a waiver for some schools from requirements to serve more nutritious meals. Democrats say they have been told the bill won’t be debated until later this summer. There was no immediate word from Republican leadership on when the bill will be back on the floor.
